Missionaries for the cult of cheerfulness

Bright Sided by Barbara Ehrenreich

I’m enjoying Barbara Ehrenreich’s book, Bright-Sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking has Undermined America; It’s the perfect antidote to the time management-y, life-goal-seeking type books that I’ve been reading lately.

She exposes the “pink ribbon culture” that blames cancer victims for making themselves sick or failing to cure themselves, and discourages them from having any sense of realism or acceptance about their disease (she speaks from direct experience, having breast cancer herself), and professional speakers who make a career out of “proselytizing for positive thinking” as “missionaries for the cult of cheerfulness.” And that’s only by chapter 2. Can’t wait to read the rest.
