Random from this week: Downton Abbey finale, bye bye bank, filing, Biggest Loser, quiet weekend ahead

Standard

Random from this week:

Downton Abbey finale: Good, but the happy ending with Mary & Matthew seemed somewhat contrived—even though it was what we all clearly wanted. I can’t believe we have to wait a year for season 3. How are we going to stay interested? Is this going to be like the Sopranos: So long between seasons that I just don’t care anymore by the time it comes around?

Opened credit union accounts last week, closed my bank accounts today. {Of course, I still have a credit card with the bank, so I can’t get rid of them completely—yet!} The bank guy who helped me seemed pretty defeated. With his job. And his life. It was weird, really. Hope he’s OK.

Spent the afternoon and evening filing papers while having my own personal Biggest Loser marathon. I’ve had so little personal time in the last month or so that isn’t filled up with kids and other busyness, that I’ve been very behind on my Hulu queue. {I haven’t gotten much reading done, either, which is sad.) I’m not really feeling BL this season, but I keep watching anyway.

I’ve been recreating my home office in the west section of the living room, and I finally brought one small filing cabinet down today. I can’t believe that I still have so much paper, when I have a perfectly good scanner. I think fear holds me back—“What if I need that original some day?” But, over the years I’ve gotten better. I definitely recycled way more paper than I filed today. Most of it needs shredded, though, which is a pain.

I hope to reinstall my laptop software this weekend. The only other things I have planned are yoga tomorrow morning, cardio of some sort on Sunday, and the last Vegan Pledge Sunday evening. It’s going to be a deliciously quiet weekend—the kids are at their mom’s.

Wishing for Friday

Standard

Is it Friday yet? This has been another exhausting week. A slow computer, so many phone calls and emails that I’m waiting for, interruptions when I’m trying to concentrate, things that seem so promising but then fall through after much wasted effort, and too many decisions that must be made. Plus more paperwork.

It doesn’t help that I’ve been out a few evenings. Yesterday, we interviewed a local cancer survivor about her vegan transformation—she has a pretty interesting story. Tonight I attended my first WordPress user group meeting in about 6 months. Of course, because we’re in Bend, its official name is WordPress and Beer. It’s BYOB, and I didn’t (but I might next time); I got to watch a lot of other people drink a wide variety of beer, and I got my head a little back into WordPress dev, which is good. Time to do a little experimentation and learn some new things.

The girls and I had time to watch about half of the latest Downton Abbey before I left tonight. We’ll have to watch the rest tomorrow night, as they’ll be gone this weekend.

Serious Downton Abbey withdrawal starts… now!

Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham

Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith)

Well, I’ve finally done it: I’ve caught up on Downton Abbey—just finished the current episode (Season 2, Episode 3).

The Dowager sure gets all the best lines, doesn’t she? I laughed out loud several times during this episode—mostly at her droll commentary.

Downton Abbey: Put that in your pipe and smoke it

Standard

I just watched the last 5 episodes of Downton Abbey, Season 1, on Netflix, pretty much back-to-back. This series certainly lives up to its reputation—the character development is very well done. I needed a mental and physical break this weekend, and this show was “Just the ticket” for a lazy Saturday. Which, coincidentally, was a phrase apparently in use in the early 1900’s, along with “Put that in your pipe and smoke it.

Even though Season 2 has already aired in the UK, it looks like the season has just begun here. The great news is that episodes 1 & 2 are already available on pbs.org. I know what I’m watching tomorrow.
